Our response to the Francis report.

We share our response to the report into the failings of Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The Francis Inquiry report was published on 6 February 2013 and examined the causes of the serious failings in care at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust between 2005 and 2009.

It details a harrowing catalogue of suffering and neglect of vulnerable patients and calls for fundamental changes to the culture of the NHS.

The report makes 290 recommendations, including:

  • openness, transparency and candour throughout the health care system (including a statutory duty of candour), fundamental standards for health care providers

  • improved support for compassionate caring and committed care and stronger healthcare leadership.

It is important for us to acknowledge that patients and their families raised many concerns about failings at the hospital, and these were not listened to. The system failed. We need to pay tribute to the determination of the families and friends of those who suffered at Mid Staffordshire. Without their tireless campaigning for the truth, we would not be where we are today.
